Nokia Campus, its China headquarters in Beijing, won the Large Office Category at Contract magazine’s 2009 Interiors Awards, held on 30 January 2009 in New York. Held since 1979, the awards showcase companies and individual designers for their commitment and creativity within the industry.
Nokia Campus Building is a green, open plan facility spanning six floors and covering 829,350-sq.-ft.. It brings the company’s business units and R&D facilities under one roof, enabling better collaboration across operations as well as providing staff with a space that is comfortable yet innovative, and more importantly, that meets their daily work and living needs. In delivering the project, M Moser Associates acted as the lead consultant, project manager and interiors consultant, bringing in the architects and engineers Arup to form the Moser-Arup consortium.
Designed from the inside-out by M Moser Associates, the offices are grouped around a Main Street which creates a ‘mini-township’ feeling. Along this avenue are shared work spaces such as client meeting suites and an auditorium space. There is also a range of daily amenities for staff including restaurants, convenience stores, a health club, concierge services, and even a jet lag room for long haul travellers to refresh themselves.
In addition to meeting the needs of staff, the other key focus of the design brief was sustainability. All the efforts on this front have lead the building to be the first in Beijing to be Gold Certified by LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) by the U.S. Green Building Council, one of the most prestigious sustainability certificates in the world. The certification means that all aspects of sustainability were addressed, with quantifiable achievements in categories such as energy savings and efficiency, materials re-use and recycling, and overall reduced negative impact of the project on the environment. The project was completed in just over two years and had its official opening on 11 April 2008.
According to the judges, "This project neatly negotiates a grand but lively central space, giving a sense of focus and involvement from all sides. Well done and surrounded by spaces with real individuality, it is a considerate environment with a variety of shared spaces for individuals as well as groups."
The Contract Interiors Awards for Large Offices is one of 14 categories, with this year seeing more than 650 submissions across all categories.
