M Moser at REACH
A grand day out for design
Moira Moser was among the design industry leaders taking the spotlight in REACH, a milestone exploration of design's past, present and future hosted at the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) on September 16, 2011.
Organised by iconic workplace furniture brand Herman Miller in association with the HKDI, REACH offered a mix of education and light-hearted fun appealing equally to design students, industry figures and members of the public. Centrepiece of the popular one-day event was a “star-studded” lecture series featuring a number of influential figures in global design today.
For the series, M Moser Associates founder and chairman Moira Moser took her place in a roster that included such luminaries as Eames Demetrios, grandson of Ray and Charles Eames; and Steve Frykholm, the designer of Herman Miller's graphic identity for the past four decades. Collectively, the lectures revealed the inspirations behind some of the most widely recognised designs of our time, and the interactions between designers, societies, and end-users.
Moser's segment of the series – entitled 'Facilitating Excellent and Exciting Workplace Design' – complemented the furniture-centric presentations of Eames Demetrios and Steve Frykholm with an overview of the trends shaping today's offices. With work becoming more collaborative, more mobile and less rigid in nature, workplaces are undergoing a corresponding transformation. Moser reflected on how this has changed the design industry itself, which is increasingly using variations of the Integrated Project Delivery model to engage closely with clients and create environments that effectively support their complex needs.
The lecture series was followed by the Hong Kong debut of 'Essential Eames', a travelling exhibition that tells the story of Ray and Charles Eames and their still-influential legacy in furniture design. Running until December 2at HKDI, the exhibition itself was designed and curated by Steve Louie of M Moser Associates, and features several never-before-seen photographs and over 30 new films about the life and work of the duo.
Capping off the REACH programme was the inaugural Pan-Asia Pacific Aeron Hockey Championships. Taking part in the fast-paced action among competitors from across the region were two M Moser teams from Hong Kong and Shanghai.
The 'Essential Eames' exhibition continues until December 2 at the Hong Kong Design Institute:
