Industrial-to-office transformation earns AIA HK award
The arvato headquarters, formerly an industrial building, received an award during the AIA HK’s annual Honors & Awards ceremony held in Hong Kong on September 30. Moira Moser, the firm’s Chairman and Founder, was on hand with members of the Shanghai team behind the building’s transformation to collect the award.
A division of the giant Bertelsmann group, arvato specialises in digital marketing, customer relationship management, supply chain management, financial and IT services. It saw the project as a way to bring its Shanghai-area employees under a single roof of what was previously a light industrial structure.
M Moser led the entire repurposing process, from undertaking due diligence on the original building to developing its design, engineering, construction and fit-out. The M Moser team collaborated closely with arvato’s to ensure the result would meet the company’s spatial and strategic needs.
Starting with the main entrance, the entire building was transformed into a series of large working environments arrayed around a distinctive ‘Idea Hub’ that serves as the collaborative nerve centre of the building. Virtually all the headquarters’ spaces are open-plan, to enable easy reconfiguration and maximise the use of natural lighting from the building’s existing skylights. Warm and vibrant, the new interiors are very conducive to team-building and collaboration.
Remarkably, much of the original structure was retained intact, boosting the project’s sustainability while minimising its potential costs.
“We thank arvato for their vision for this project, which really shows how you can get an absolutely contemporary and effective office from a building made for an entirely different purpose. It’s a relevant prospect for many companies today, and our team relished the challenge of making it work” said Nabil Sabet, who heads M Moser’s Shanghai office and served as director of the arvato project.
