Biophilia in the workplace - Abi Roni joins Contract & Commercial Design panel
This month Associate Director, Abi Roni Mattom, participated in Contract & Commercial Design‘s panel event, hosted by Featherlite, to discuss “Blending nature into workspaces”.
As a launchpad for the commercial design industry in India, Contract & Commercial Design brings ideas and products that will enable the commercial interior environments of the future.
Addressing the question, “From a designer’s perspective, why do you think bringing nature into workspaces is important?”, Mattom shared the positive impact biophilia can have on health and happiness. He emphasised the responsibility of designers to ensure this essential need is met in office spaces in India and across the globe, explaining a number of key biophiliophic principles:
- Visual and non-visual connection to nature: multi-sensory stimuli can increase the benefits of biophilic design. Seeing, smelling and hearing nature can enhance the positive experience.
- Natural materials and biophilic forms: biophilic design is not only about plants, but the human response to patterns seen in nature. Even if we understand these patterns to be non-living, the brain associates them with representations of living elements.
- Non rhythmic sensory stimuli: nature is always moving. If the space you work in is visually static, the air is stale and the sound is persistant, your level of stress and anxiety will automatically increase. Non-rhythmic sensory stimuli are therefore vitally important.
This was followed by further discussion from the panel on the holistic benefits of bringing nature into the workspace, including general productivity and the impact on the employees, facility managers and more.
