The challenge was to create a thriving and dynamic powerhouse for film and media leveraging the strong flow of young professionals and talent from the nearby Songjiang University. Developed for an international competition, the Songjang Media Hub is a joint venture project between Best Linkage Group and the Shanghai Film Association.
Flexibility & Future Growth
Working closely with the client, we created a large-scale masterplan with cutting-edge space utilisation and extensive flexibility. With facilities including office space, production, post-production, screening, theatre spaces and an expansive exhibition area, the overall complex would act as a one-stop-shop for the film industry.
From small studios to towers linking an array of public services such as banks, conference areas, accommodation and basic retail spaces, the design provides a wide range of leasing options for small media companies and media start-ups, and a huge onsite data bank to serve as storage. To accommodate future growth, we introduced a range of phases to provide for both small scale and larger scale expansions.
Water & Connectivity
The Yangtze River and its connected waterways provide a network for commercial activity and livelihood. Likewise, the design concept of the Global Digital Media Hub in Song Jiang echoes this model by focusing on a central canal to provide spaces for community activities and enjoyment.
Inspired by the heritage, culture and structure of traditional Chinese villages and the central focus of water as a source of life, this transformative redevelopment project embraces human scale, connecting people, space and water with the surrounding landscape.
