Based on previous successful collaboration with Emerson in Guangzhou, M Moser was appointed as a trusted partner to design and deliver the firm’s new Beijing workplace.
In addition to creating an innovative, exemplary space to support business growth, the office also needed to create a strong sense of “home” after 20 years in the previous location. The team was tasked to design a space that would build loyalty and sense of belonging while enhancing productivity.
Creating a highly flexible, human-centric workplace that reinforces positive culture through scientific space planning;
Reflecting the identity of both the city and brand to create a memorable user experience, incorporating legacy features of Beijing;
Supporting diverse work needs through a variety of settings driven by activity-based work concepts.

Generating a positive workplace culture
To help Emerson achieve its goal of creating a versatile and efficient workplace environment, M Moser analysed its current space, focusing on key indicators including space utilisation, work patterns, and growth expectations.
Taking into consideration the requirements of each department, the solution incorporates fixed and free-address work arrangements with 65% of the space reserved for unassigned seating to encourage movement. The purpose is to optimise space usage, while reinforcing a positive work culture and fostering agile behaviours by providing freedom of choice.
The space features a greenery wall and prioritises natural light, creating a comfortable environment that is conducive to employee health and wellbeing.
The design is influenced by Beijing’s cultural heritage and Emerson’s brand spirit, cultivating an immersive space with a unique “site” experience.
The brick wall at the entrance is a historic nod to the extensive city walls of old Beijing. Inspiration has also been drawn from landmarks such as the Great Wall, the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven. This is brought to life through the creative use of materials, textures, colours and shapes in telephone booths, and collaboration and refreshment areas. The result is a space that reflects the essence of the city with a vibrant touch.
Paying homage to Emerson’s industrial traditions and minimalist aesthetics, the design adopts simple grey and white colour patterns throughout the open office. The training room features ceiling lights that are creatively arranged to honour Emerson’s brand logo. The company’s iconic shade of blue has been applied throughout the space to strengthen brand awareness, facilitate a sense of belonging and drive a memorable visitor experience.
Activity and collaboration spaces have been prioritised throughout the building core. The arrangement creates an effective partition between sound sensitive, focus areas and team interaction spaces, while saving costs and optimising usage.
The arrangement of enclosed collaboration spaces and telephone booths has been planned based on user behaviour observations and studies of the sales, engineering and R&D teams. The open office includes sufficient breakout spaces for team working, supporting impromptu discussions and ad-hoc meetings, while encouraging an agile workplace culture.
By scientifically planning the arrangement of workstations and functional spaces, this dynamic office environment supports focused work and collaboration, while honouring privacy and interaction to stimulate innovation. Design traits inspired by Beijing heritage and Emerson’s brand identity have created an emotionally connected space that fulfils a sense of belonging.
