Together with Airbnb’s Environments team who worked on the main concept, M Moser was tasked to deliver a project inspired by Chinese tradition and the heritage of Beijing, combined with a striking, modern aesthetic.
As you enter the space, you are greeted by an open reception design that makes full use of the natural light and views of the building. The eyes are drawn towards the Chinese lanterns playfully highlighted above the counter. The waiting area has a welcoming earth tone with earthy red-orange tiles and modern Chinese furniture.
Walking through, you are greeted by a large canteen/townhall space. Airbnb embraces nature through hanging plants and greenery that adorn the ceiling and walls. The counter wall was inspired by the quirky patterns you see in the busy Beijing streets, creating a beautiful contrast of urban modernism and nature. The furniture retains a clean aesthetic to balance all textures and elements of the space.
The main working area was inspired by the Beijing Hutongs, using acoustic panels in place of typical grey bricks. As with the rest of the space, the Airbnb Environments Team not only considered the aesthetics, but also functionality, implementing finishes that address the acoustics of the open environment. The main workspace has been further divided along the corner breakout areas by a variety of different Chinese elements (wood, earth, water, fire, and metal). These have been purposely placed along the corners to function as alternative work points or ad-hoc meeting spaces.
As with other Airbnb workspaces, each of the meeting rooms was influenced by a different theme, creating a unique experience as you enter each space. The main challenge was the extensive list of materials and furniture procured to recreate these areas, which required out-of-the-box thinking to provide homely, yet durable solutions.
The Beijing office now provides a truly cutting-edge approach to space by providing the latest technology required for meetings/collaboration and a myriad of sustainable materials. The end result offers a playful balance between whimsical features and a unique, Chinese-inspired look-and-feel. Modern, clean lines throughout the main office and meeting rooms have now become a design imprint of the Airbnb global office experience.
