Amid Newark’s broader cultural and urban renewal, Audible retained M Moser to transform the exterior of its headquarters. Integrating into the vision outlined by the New Jersey Performing Arts Center’s (NJPAC) Waterfront Masterplan, this project was part of an ambitious urban renewal initiative to reawaken the city’s cultural vitality.
Reflecting Audible’s deeper commitment to community and storytelling, this revitalisation project honours the site’s history while creating space for the city’s future.
Audible’s mission to amplify voices and stories inspired the design. We set out to create a place that feels as ‘radial to the community’ as the company’s logo implies, merging corporate identity with community spirit, art and legacy.
Respecting the building’s heritage, we leveraged adaptive reuse as a mindful approach. The new façade features reclaimed wooden slats from local suppliers, paying homage to the past while reducing environmental impact.
One of the project’s most compelling interventions is celebrating Newark’s artistic soul. After selecting the buildings to feature large-scale murals, we designed uplighting under the nearby rail overpasses to infuse the area with vibrant, expressive energy.
The murals, commissioned by the Newark Artist Collaboration x Audible, reinforce a sense of identity that extends beyond walls into the broader city. Audible uplifted the immense creative talent local to Newark and helped connect artists with the resources to beautify the city.
It’s architectural thinking and placemaking rooted in people, culture and sustainability
Chris Swartout, Director, M Moser AssociatesThe renovation is a powerful response to both Audible’s brand and Newark’s future. It’s about placemaking with purpose, uplifting communities, enhancing daily experiences and creating a visible, lasting impact through design.
