Relocating a life science headquarters to inspire innovation & empower employees

Bayer,
Shanghai

Bayer Group is a life science company with an 150-year+ history. It believes that offering outstanding R&D capabilities and motivating employees are key factors in achieving long-term success and stable growth. The relocation of its Shanghai headquarters needed to reflect this.

Bayer’s new workplace demonstrates the integration of design, brand experience, engineering and construction. It successfully caters to the varied needs of its employees. The new headquarters brings a higher quality of office life to the Group and its employees.

Individual workspace efficiency

The new workplace is smaller in size than its previous location, but t hasn’t impacted the feeling of spaciousness. Employees feel comfortable and at ease when working, with more room for collaboration, interaction and cooperation.

Emphasis has been placed on the efficiency of the individual work space. With new adjustable tables that can be lowered or raised, people can sit or stand to work, supporting choice and health.

The front-office & reception provide space for large events and training sessions, conferences, interviews and small negotiations. They are all equipped with various lighting options. The diamond ceiling features dimmer switches to change colour temperature and brightness.

We designed the building with a complex radiant cooling ceiling and air conditioning system, providing another layer of comfort.

Driving cultural integration

Visual elements give spaces meaning. All floors have been painted in different colours to stimulate movement and encourage fresh perspectives.

Conference room names are inspired by Bayer’s values and medical products. We collaborated closely with Bayer’s global brand team. This involved creating an immersive brand experience including a range of logos dotted throughout the space.

Taking the characteristics and preferences of employees into account, we designed a number of essential ‘go-to’ areas in the office. These colourful, detailed destinations serve as popular photography spots to strengthen sense of community, company pride and professional enthusiasm.

Motivating involvement

Office projects are never developed by designers alone. We work closely with our customers - from discussing workplace design concepts to construction and delivery. The team were faced with the unique challenges related to COVID-19 and the long Spring Festival holiday. However, they maintained a strong mentality to ensure the timely delivery of a high quality office.

Throughout the process, Bayer employees were encouraged to be active participants. We listened carefully to requests on colour, layouts, visual characteristics and more. This enabled us to create a workplace design that truly represents the needs of its people.

Our integrated team worked hand in hand with Bayer to deliver a modern office space that inspires innovation and empowers employees. A place where streamlined space, brand, culture and high performance collide. The new environment supports creative inspiration, professionalism and sense of belonging.
