Headquartered in the USA, Illumina is a leader in developing, manufacturing, and marketing life science tools and integrated systems for large-scale analysis of genetic variation and function. Expanding its China operations, Illumina partnered with M Moser to design and deliver its new China headquarters, including a biosafety-standard lab space.
A primary objective was to create a modern, sustainable environment to support scientific demonstration and customer services. The space also needed to provide staff with choice and comfort. This would help them to embrace the relocation from the city centre to the emerging Caohejing high-tech park.
Establishing a bold brand impression
The space brings to life a Nature-meets-tech concept. This is inspired by Illumina’s business vision -“improving human health by unlocking the power of the genome”. Honouring the company’s scientific strength, a staircase in the form of DNA molecules connects the upper and lower floors. This serves as an impactful brand encounter from the beginning of the user journey.
Upon arrival, users are greeted by a welcoming ambience curated with biophilia, wood and marble. This combination honours Illumina’s commitment to sustainability while setting up an expectation for the rest of the journey.
Throughout the space, wood finishes create a consistent, natural environment. This has been accented by colourful furniture, flooring in gradient colour palette, and playful lighting to boost energy and mental wellbeing.
Activating an interactive user journey
Combining a workplace and solution centre addresses a diverse use of space. The team developed a “4I” (impress, inspire, inform, interact) planning concept to guide the design development of various touchpoints.
The upper floor features the Illumina Solution Centre. This hosts a full range of Illumina products and equipment for customer demonstration and training. Designed to biosafety standards Level 2 (BSL-2), the centre follows strict design requirements and construction techniques. It also incorporates specific MEP set-ups to ensure safety and prevent contamination. Transparent partitions offer clear views for visiting customers.
Located on the lower level, the multi-functional, stepped seating area faces an operable wall. This can expand to host town hall meetings, training sessions, and large company events. Small meetings rooms have been planned nearby for easy access to client meetings and formal conversations that require privacy.
Diverse work settings support choice. These include private individual corners, informal collaboration areas, phone booths, and a large training room.
Designed for wellbeing
Illumina focuses on how world-class benefits are critical in shaping the future of human health and staff performance. The new workplace includes natural materials, ergonomic furniture, and greenery in an activity-based work environment.
The upper floor transition corridor is a tranquil environment. It features wood flooring, loose furniture in a calming colour palette and a variety of tropical plants.
A large pantry and social hub supports the need to meet, work, and play. Vibrant colours support energy and collaboration. Power outlets support continuous mobile working in an agile setting. This flexibility enriches staff choice and transforms the pantry into a multi-functional space.
Partnering with Illumina, M Moser designed and delivered a high-performance workplace and hybrid lab environment. Cultivating a distinct user journey for Illumina’s stakeholders, the design prioritises health and wellbeing for a happy workplace vital to business growth.
