As recipients of multiple international awards, we were recently invited to participate in a live talk organised by the Global Design Awards Institute for the FX International Interior Awards. The discussion centred on how workplaces are evolving and where they are heading in the years to come.
Director, Lawrence Lok, reflected on the transformation of offices from uniform, one-size-fits-all layouts to more human-centred and diverse environments. He highlighted how technologies such as AI are reshaping creative processes and showcased the award-winning Spotify Singapore project as an example of how brand culture and employee experience can be translated into physical space.
Lawrence outlined the most striking changes in the past two decades: offices that once revolved around rows of identical desks and single-purpose meeting rooms have gradually evolved into workplaces that are diverse, adaptable and centred on people’s needs.
Today, the office is no longer just a place to sit and work. It accommodates multiple working styles and meeting sizes, while allowing individuals greater control over lighting, acoustics and temperature. The workplace is now a setting that truly responds to people’s needs.
Drawing on the FX Award-winning Spotify Singapore project, Lawrence explained how the team began with a deep dive into the client’s culture, conducting extensive research and co-creation workshops. From this process, clear priorities emerged and we translated them into the workplace experience.
Spotify’s office includes open spaces that support public events and amplify the brand’s presence, as well as a wide variety of areas for focused work and collaboration. The destination strengthens Spotify’s brand impact within the local community and motivates people to return to the office, making it a success for the client.
When asked about the future, Lawrence emphasised that AI is profoundly changing how workplaces are conceived and delivered. On one hand, AI handles repetitive tasks, giving people more time for creativity and decision-making.
On the other, when integrated with BIM and digital platforms, it enables projects to progress across multiple fronts: planning, modelling, engineering and cost assessment, with greater speed and accuracy.
He also shared how M Moser is introducing digital twin systems in projects such as HSBC New York. These systems provide staff with personalised environmental controls, while AI optimises energy use, supporting health, sustainability and productivity in tandem.
The workplace of the future may not only be built for people. It will also need to adapt to the presence of AI colleagues. We are exploring how spaces can evolve to support this new mode of work.
