Upfront Ventures built its reputation on spotting potential early, whether in founders, ideas or its own evolution. Having grown into a highly respected name in early-stage venture capital, the firm carries weight across the global innovation community, expanding in influence each year.
The company’s growth necessitated a space that reflected its evolution. Confident, creative and mature yet deeply human. The firm’s Santa Monica roots were exchanged for a new Los Angeles headquarters; cementing the statement of who they’ve become and where they’re headed next.
The move to a repositioned commercial tower in Los Angeles marked a significant shift. The building offered an elegant lobby, security desk and shared floors, a marked change from their previous space. This magnitude of change stirred questions among leadership. Would a polished environment feel too corporate? Would it feel disconnected from the startup founders they championed?
Our team’s challenge was to design a workplace that matured without losing touch with culture and connection, projecting success while maintaining the authenticity that made Upfront Ventures who they are. The design had to speak to credibility, not shout conformity.
That was the mantra. The brief outlined refinement and restraint, but with an edge. Upfront wanted a home that balanced grown-up polish with youthful irreverence, where high design could coexist with moments of creative rebellion. Materials and lighting became the language of that tension. Warm wood and stone, bold colours, textured walls and unexpected details that revealed personality and play. Furthermore, the design embodies green building principles with materials and systems chosen for efficiency, durability and environmental performance.
Our design channels the essence of Southern California modern living, a blend of Malibu warmth and eclectic charm. Home and hotel, independent spirit with a neighbourhood-centric feel. It’s sophisticated yet effortless, translating the client’s entrepreneurial roots and West Coast authenticity into an environment that feels comfortable and elevated.
They wanted a space that exuded credibility and refinement yet stayed true to the creative energy of the brand. Too polished, and they risked alienating the founders they invest in. Too raw, and the space wouldn’t match their stature. The design had to do both.
Sam Farhang, Director, M Moser AssociatesBehind the aesthetic was a strategic rethink of how people work together. In traditional venture-capital settings, partners occupy private offices while associates sit in open bullpens. Upfront wanted something more democratic.
Our team led deep conversations around hierarchy, collaboration and equity, ultimately developing a four-person pod model. Each enclosed pod hosted a small group with shared purpose, finance, talent, or investment, encouraging organic collaboration and quick exchanges.
Everyone, from junior associates to senior partners, occupied the same type of workspace. This re-imagined structure dissolved hierarchy while still providing acoustic privacy and focused environments. Layers of focus rooms, phone booths and social zones support individual rhythm and team energy, allowing people to move fluidly through different modes of work.
From layout to lighting, every decision connected back to Upfront’s DNA, relational, not transactional. The workplace became a physical embodiment of its approach to investing. Bold yet grounded. Smart but never distant.
Subtle branding and material storytelling, through texture, proportion and tone, mirror its identity as partners who build relationships as much as portfolios. The result feels less like a financial firm and more like a creative studio for ideas.
By blending spatial equity, material refinement and just the right dose of confidence, we helped Upfront Ventures build a space that reflects who they are today and who they’re becoming next.
The finished environment captures Upfront Ventures’ growth story in built form, from disruptive newcomer to established leader still hungry for innovation. It’s mature without losing its pulse, refined yet unafraid to experiment. The design speaks to both founders and investors, approachable, authentic and unmistakably evolved.
