Elevating the workplace with art: insights from HSBC Digital

How can a workplace communicate its corporate messaging and values in an engaging way? Director Wing Leung and Brand Experience Lead, Addy Walcott, addressed this challenge in a discussion on “Designing spaces that work” hosted at the M Moser-designed HSBC Digital workplace in Hong Kong with three key principles.

Infusing the workplace with art

They showcased the different types of murals, graphics, and digital installations created by local artists who were invited to help breathe new life into this new workplace. “Art communicates passion and energy,” Walcott shared, “Our mission was to change the perception of what working in a global bank can be by delivering a creative and immersive workplace experience.”

Inspired by the bank’s symbolic lion guardians, each of the two entrances features an extensive representation stretching along graphic walls to illustrate values of creativity and growth. References of the Hong Kong landscape and the company’s cultural heritage are also incorporated into the design through murals and detailed graphics.

Involving staff in the creative process

Highlighting the importance of engaging staff early in the design process, Leung shared the co-creation journey that led to a personalised workplace experience centred on its people: “Brainstorming sessions and workshops between HSBC staff, the artists, and our design team helped to deliver a meaningful workplace that enables innovation, learning, and knowledge-sharing throughout the organisation.”

Creating an office that doesn’t feel like an office

The key objective was to deliver a creative and fun environment that facilitates closer connections among staff by offering diverse work settings to accommodate a wide range of needs. Using custom artwork helped to invigorate the working areas, defying traditional expectations of what a banking workplace can be.

Through custom signage, wayfinding and meaningful artwork, the result is a vibrant workplace that embodies a spirit of innovation over which HSBC Digital staff can connect.
