Inform, engage and inspire
In relocating the office from the bustling Lujiazui Business District to the emerging Qiantan Business District, M Moser devised a comprehensive change management plan from project inception. The goal was to ease the relocation process, and support transparent, effective communication.
In addition to conventional interviews and questionnaires, M Moser’s interdisciplinary team organised a range of interactive activities, including furniture voting, a Virtual Reality space tour, and various wellness workshops. These sessions facilitated a well-rounded understanding of the new office environment along with its vision, while providing valuable insights for subsequent design decisions.
“The design team worked closely with Covestro and our strategy, change management and sustainability specialists at every step of the project to achieve an innovative, agile, and healthy workplace.”

Agile for choice, flexible for diversity
Preliminary discussions with Covestro stakeholders revealed the necessity to create an agile workplace with a wide range of settings that would support the business culture. By performing a variety of quantitative research (storage, space utilisation monitoring and data analysis) combined with qualitative findings (work pattern observations and workshops) to drive insights, the workplace strategists collaborated with the design team to deliver a 100% unassigned seating solution.
Extending across five floors, the workplace features an interior staircase linking the top two floors to enhance connectivity and open up new opportunities to meet and mingle. A variety of furniture options have been planned to provide diversity of function and aesthetics, while meeting flexible work needs.
Inspired by Covestro’s distinct brand identity, the design prioritises vibrant colours throughout the space, infusing telephone booths, collaboration areas and open spaces with energy to reinforce brand values.
Designed for health and wellbeing
As the first WELL Gold-certified office in the global chemical industry, Covestro’s new workplace in Shanghai sets the standard for future-proofed work environments through dedication to staff wellbeing and sustainability. Stringent requirements have been met for air quality, water, and lighting, while addressing the physical and mental needs of staff to foster a warm, positive workplace culture.
Height-adjustable tables and standing, bicycle/treadmill desks have been incorporated to increase physical activity and energy. Each floor is equipped with a functional space designed to encourage movement and reduce stress, including a yoga room, fitness space, meditation area and ping-pong room.
Breakout and collaboration spaces benefit from maximum access to natural daylight, celebrating the site’s spectacular view, while floor-to-ceiling windows in the open café creates relaxing atmosphere for gathering, conversations and informal collaborations to take place.
Covestro’s new Shanghai workplace is a true success. In addition to becoming the world’s first WELL Gold-certified office interior in the chemical industry, it has achieved a 97% satisfaction rate among staff. Using a holistic approach has once again proved the effectiveness of integrating design with workplace strategy, change management and wellness to yield optimal results.
