Developing a world-class headquarters as part of its own mixed-use development, Lenovo aspired to create an environment that would encourage its research scientists and corporate staff to collaborate within a space reflecting the look-and-feel of its brand image and product range.

An “inside-out” approach

Embodying both optimised functions and a distinctive brand-appropriate form, our “inside-out” approach sought to create a state-of-the-art complex and beacon in Shanghai. Our integrated team of architects and engineers worked closely with Lenovo’s end users and project teams to design the new facility on Lenovo’s existing campus. This complex was to include a newly built area, both above and below ground, of approximately 54,000 square metres seamlessly connected to the existing building on campus. The expansion project reimagined Lenovo’s current campus as a canvas that blurred the lines between architecture and the internal landscape.

Creating visual connections

With towers aligned to create subtle, visual connections to the surrounding community, especially from the lobby, canteen, training centre and office spaces, verticality is exaggerated by facades of copper-aluminium alloy fins that minimise glare and solar gain. Lenovo’s high-tech product lines inspired the design of the external building envelope, while the interior space was designed as a composition of unique natural landscape experiences at each floor. The complex features a courtyard extending to its sustainable park-like surroundings, to help enrich the diversity of the neighbourhood.

Connecting to a developing urban setting

As a key anchor development at the heart of Shanghai’s ZhangJiang Jitech zone, the Lenovo campus not only provides direct proximity to light rail and metro, but also includes a retail storefront for additional F&B and financial services outlets as part of a public space and urban revitalisation strategy. These spaces will further enhance the overall employee experience by providing access to the convenience of a downtown office within a new hi-tech zone.
